NEW: Business Promotion Service

THE HU12 BUSINESS PAGE (see link tab at the top of this page) has been provided as a source of information so that local residents can easily find local businesses. Primarily it has been set-up for residents' use.

However, we now want to offer opportunities for local businesses to benefit from new promotional opportunities available through social media.

Our BUSINESS PROMOTION SERVICE will aim to get your business recognised and followed by a new audience of internet customers. You will benefit from:
  1. An enhanced listing on the HU12 Business Page with photos and links to news items about your business from across the internet and the media;
  2. A link on the left-hand side-bar of this website;
  3. Dedicated Facebook and Twitter accounts set up linking directly back to your website for you to use - or we can manage the accounts for you at no extra charge;
  4. Optional: YouTube and Flickr accounts for those who intend to do lots of video or photo promotional work;
  5. Regular posting of your news, special offers and other information to the HU12 website and Hedon Blog, to your Twitter and Facebook accounts and also sent to local media outlets (newspapers, radio and TV);
  6. A monthly report sent to you, listing your number of new followers, friends, 'Likes' and additional publicity gained.
Of course, we encourage you to set up your own social media accounts and engage directly with your new customers and contacts. BUT if you haven't the time or the inclination we can do this promotional work for you at no extra cost.

All that we ask is that you regularly send us at least one e-mail a month outlining your latest news and information that you wish to share. Of course you can send us as much information as you like - but we can only promote the information that you send to us.

We are offering this new unique service at an experimental £1 per month! This amazing low price will allow you to easily test us out.

If you have already got a listing on HU12 then e-mail hu12@gmx.com for further information - otherwise fill in our Online Form and tick the box at the end.

Co-operatives Fortnight Petition

SIGN THE CO-OPERATIVE PETITION to narrow the gap between rich and poor.
The gap between rich and poor is at its highest since records began. One half of the UK population now owns just one percent of the wealth. A generation ago, they had twelve per cent.
We can change this. Co-operatives Fortnight, is taking place until 9th July 2011, and is the co-operative sector’s national campaign. It aims to show how co-operatives help narrow the gap by giving everyday employees, customers and residents an equal say in decisions and share in the profits.
The central element of the campaign is an ambitious aim of getting 100,000 signatures in support of its petition to trigger national debate on co-operative action to help narrow the gap between rich and poor.
Click to here to sign and share the petition.

As well as signing and sharing the petition there are plenty of ways to get involved, online and offline. Visit www.uk.coop/yourstoshare/getinvolved to get involved. Join on Facebook and Follow on Twitter.

Royal Wedding and Social Media

YOU CAN WATCH THE ROYAL WEDDING 2011 in many ways thanks to the advent of new social media.

The Official Royal Wedding 2011 website is the portal through which to access everything about the wedding.

There is the official Facebook Page to share your Royal Wedding Stories (it seems it's now compulsory to have a FB page for any event!) and The British Monarchy has its own Facebook Page with a special 'wedding' tab.

You can follow on Twitter at @ClarenceHouse. There is the official Royal Channel on YouTube which will be showing events live as they happen.

The British Monarchy's Photostream on Flickr will gather and collect the photographic record from the big day.

So I think this can quite rightly claim to be the top social media event of the year as well!

Humberside Police are all a Twitter!

PC Darren Kirkwood Tweets about having to police his favourite football team!
HUMBERSIDE POLICE are conducting an experiment using Twitter. Each Division of the Force has its own account - East Riding C-Division is on @Humberbeat_ERY - and different types of officers are Twittering on their affairs.

Officers are using their accounts to tell us about patrolling the busy streets of Hull on a Friday and Saturday night. They are commenting on neighbourhood policing, burglary and vehicle crime investigations, and responses to incidents as they occur.

Find out more about the experiment including a list of the officers you can follow on Twitter, over at the Humberside Police Website - Social Network.

In response to low attendances at Police Community Forums then the Hedon Blog has suggested that 'virtual online meetings' may be a good idea to bring communities and officers together.

Services like MyPolice described on HU12 might be piloted in this area to encourage greater online collaboration between people and the police that serve them.

When some of these ideas were suggested in 2010 they perhaps seemed quite radical and far-fethched, but the appearance of Twittering police officers are probably a sign that these ideas are being looked at with new internet eyes!

humberMUD: Focus on the photographic business

THE LATEST REGULAR MONTHLY gathering of networking and knowledge-sharing organisation humberMUD will be focused on photography. Four speakers will each share their perspective on this growing aspect of the economically vibrant media industry.

Speakers on the night, which is a free event and takes place this Thursday (November 18), include Jacobs Digital Photography and Video, who will be showcasing the latest developments in camera technology.

Hedon Icon - Image by Neil Holmes
Neil Holmes will also speak. Neil has been a photographer for thirty years, and has spent the last twelve years as a freelance embracing the transition to digital photography. Neil, who showcases his work online, brings some contemporary insight with a talk entitled 'the photographer, blogging & social media'. Neil has been quite a friend to the Hedon Blog over the last 18 months with some of his images being featured on that website.

In addition, photographers and long-term collaborators Scott Wigglesworth and Chris Oaten will speak about their many and varied creative and artistic projects in the city and beyond.

The new Clear As MUD forum during the evening will provide members with an update on creative and business developments in the Humber Street/Fruit Market area.

To kick-start networking, everyone attending is invited to bring promotional material with them, including pop-up banners, posters and flyers.

humberMUD chair Mal Williamson said: “We've now settled into our home at Fruit and have enjoyed increasing attendance month-on-month. What we now want to encourage is more networking and to be seen as the place where business can be done.”

The evening starts at 6pm with free food and nibbles plus drinks available from the bar. Presentations take place at 7-9pm and are followed by networking and music from DJ The Reverend.

For more information about humberMUD visit www.humbermud.com search for humberMUD on Facebook and follow on twitter @humberMUD.

Twitter ye not? Why not?

TWITTER has some 145 million registered users worldwide. It was set up in 2006 by entrepreneur Jack Dorsey and named after the noise that excited communicative birds make and was further defined as "a short burst of inconsequential information".

But rather than just been a source of inconsequential information Twitter has become a key part of the communication methods of celebrities, companies, public services and even entire Governments.

The idea behind Twitter is rather simple - you set up an account and follow other users who in turn can choose to follow you. You can send your followers text messages which must be no more than 140 characters long. However, the real benefit of Twitter is that it allows you to follow the people, subjects and issues that matter to you. Trusted online communities are formed of people interested in collecting and sharing the information that interests them.

In practice what you get is a rich source of almost instant information about the subjects that concern you - or your business or group. So you get notice of press releases from government departments far sooner than waiting for official e-mail releases. You got information on events from people actually attending and Tweeting about them. Decision makers will contact their followers to let them know of the latest developments - or even to test the waters about new ideas and initiatives. Companies will do vital market research amongst their followers.

In short Twitter is a useful service; so why are there not more people from the HU12 post code area using the service?

If you wish to join Twitter then visit http://twitter.com

If you want help in signing up then have a look at the document produced by the Hedon Blogger on setting up the @HU12net Twitter account on Scribd: Setting Up a Twitter Account.

And after you have signed up then you might want to follow these Twitter folk:
