Elections 2011: Surprising results as Lib Dem vote collapses

THE COLLAPSE OF THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC vote nationally has prompted some surprising results in the local elections.

In South West Holderness sitting councillor Steve Sloan was pushed into 7th place and Conservative candidates John Dennis and Mike Bryan topped the poll. Ann Suggit was re-elected taking the third seat available.

In Goole, Josie Head ousted the sitting Liberal Democrat councillor to become the first member of the East Riding Council representing the new East Yorkshire Independents Party (EYi).

In Tranby, 19 year old Labour Candidate Josh Newlove took the second spot and becomes a councillor following a squeeze on the Lib Dem vote.

In South East Holderness sitting Councillor Chuck Hunter lost his seat seat after standing as an Independent following being barred by his Conservative Party from standing as one of its candidates. The three seats on the council were all taken by the official Conservative candidates.

A piece of work produced by Jamie Potter on the Election Results at his Google Docs reveals that the Conservatives have gained 7 seats on the East Riding Council, Labour has gained 3, and the EYi gained 1 seat - mostly at the expense of the Liberal Democrats who lost 10 seats!

The new make-up of the East Riding Council is:

Labour 6
Liberal Democrat 3
Independent 3
East Yorkshire Independents 1
SDP 1

The big news story of the night though was the loss of 11 Lib Dem seats on Hull City Council giving control of the authority to the Labour Party.

More local Election News

WHILE 'ELECTION FEVER' IS CERTAINLY NOT sweeping the area, there has been some interest in the local elections in Holderness - at least from the politicians!

As well as our main election coverage in the South West Holderness area listed on Ward Election News, HU12 has picked up and noticed other snippets of news.

Hedon Town Council has 14 candidates standing for 12 seats and some candidates have been busy leafleting the town asking for voters support. Catch all the Hedon leaflets we've come across at our previous Hedon Town Council Slideshow or at our Flickr pages. Independent Jim Lindop had his statement published on the Hedon Blog.

Voters in South East Holderness have a colourful line up of candidates which includes Independent, Neil Whitelam, a former Keyingham Parish Councillor and Parliamentary candidate who describes himself as a "Community activist" and  "Patriotic alternative to the old parties...". See Neil Whitelam's election statement (Google Docs). Also in that Ward is former Conservative Councillor Charles 'Chuck' Hunter who after serving for 12 years on the East Riding Council was deemed an unacceptable candidate for that party so is also standing as an independent. He has advertised his candidacy in the Holderness Gazette on 21st and 28th April (see at ElectionLeaflets.org).

Also advertised in the Gazette on 28th April was Ann Suggit's candidacy (Google Docs). Unfortunately Ann was listed as a North Holderness candidate and not South West Holderness where she is really standing!

Elections 2011 - South East Holderness candidates

COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2011 are also being held in neighbouring Wards. South East Holderness Ward, which includes Keyingham, Withernsea and down to Spurn, has 12 candidates standing for 3 seats.

One of the candidates is Charles "Chuck" Hunter who was one of the sitting Conservative councillors but was not placed on an approved shortlist of candidates and is standing as an Independent.

Following action by an internal Conservative party Selection Committee in November last year, 10 Councillors - including the Leader of the Council - were initially not approved as candidates for these elections, but following appeals 7 were accepted. However, Chuck Hunter had his appeal rejected.

Also standing for election in the Ward is Holderness RAID campaigner and former BNP general election candidate Neil Whitelam. Now not affiliated to any party, Neil Whitelam is standing as an Independent.
