Glass to be collected in Blue Bins

GLASS CAN BE PUT INTO BLUE BINS under a new collection service to be introduced by the East Riding Council.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is launching its latest kerbside collection which will allow residents to put glass, a wider range of plastics and Tetra Pak in their blue bins.

In a phased roll out over the next six months, the council will deliver the new service to up to 150,000 households across the area.

The roll out of the new service will take place in Holderness, including Hedon, Withernsea and surrounding villages, from 27th June to the 22nd July.

It is projected that an additional 3,800 tonnes of glass will be taken out of landfill.

Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for environment at the Council said:

“New technologies have become available which can handle mixed papers, cans, plastics and glass. The materials are separated out and reprocessed into other products. Glass, for example, is easily recyclable and does not degrade however often it is recycled. The new service aims to provide residents with an easy way to recycle even more materials while, at the same time, saving council taxpayers’ money.”

As part of the new service, the council is offering residents the choice of a larger, 240 litre blue bin in exchange for the smaller one that most households currently have.

Residents are urged not to put glass, further ranges of plastics and Tetra Paks into their blue bins until they receive a letter from the council informing them of the start of the scheme in their area.

Hornsea resident Tracey Topliss said:

"I think the new service will be brilliant. Before, I haven't been able to recycle as much glass as I would have wished because it meant having to drive to the site. Being able to put glass and more plastics in the blue bin let's us recycle much more, and I'll be definitely be doing that."

East Riding Record 54% Recycling Rate

EAST RIDING RESIDENTS recycled and composted a record 54 per cent of their household waste in April.

This percentage is the highest monthly figure ever achieved in the East Riding according to the Council and includes the first collections of food waste and cardboard in the brown bins in Holderness, Driffield and Bridlington.

The total amount of waste collected last month from across the council’s 10 household waste recycling sites, the 140 bring sites and the kerbside collections was 18,304 tonnes, compared with 17,849 tonnes in April of last year.

Last month, 3,759 tonnes of waste was collected from the East Riding’s brown bins, which included the first food waste collections in Holderness, Driffield and Bridlington. This tonnage was thirty five per cent higher than the amount collected from the brown bins in the previous month, March.

Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning at the East Riding Council, said: “This is an outstanding achievement by all residents. It goes to show that the collection of food waste and cardboard in the brown bins is just what our residents wanted. Once the roll out is completed towards the end of June, we are expecting to keep even more of this waste out of landfill, saving our taxpayers the increasing cost of landfill taxes, while protecting the environment".

Flytipping costs us at least £68 per hour!

TO CLEAR AWAY FLY TIPPED RUBBISH - illegally dumped waste - costs the council £68 per hour! And to dispose of such waste correctly at a landfill site can cost a further £56 per tonne - and if asbestos is included in the waste this can rise to £1,500 per tonne to be collected and disposed off!

In the period between April 2006 to February 2011 the East Riding Council dealt with 4,717 reports of fly-tipping on its land and investigated each incident. These investigations - which also incur costs to the Council - led to 59 successful prosecutions, 11 formal cautions and the issue of 232 formal warning letters.

These figures have been released by the East Riding Council following a Freedom of Information request.

The Environment Agency has said that on a national basis, dealing with the problem of fly tipping can cost £100-£150 million every year. This cost falls on taxpayers and private landowners. Fly-tipping adversely affects local environments, threatening the health of rivers and recreation areas and even reducing property prices in the area.

New Brown Bin Service comes to Holderness

THE ROLL OUT of the new Brown Bin service, which will allow food waste and cardboard to be put into the Brown Bins, has started in Holderness.

By the end of July up to 150,000 households across the East Riding will be putting food waste and cardboard into the brown bin, so that it can be sent for composting.

Once households have received a brown caddy and information pack, food waste, including plate scraps and bones, and cardboard can be put into the brown bin.
