Humber Enterprise Zone approved

FORMAL ANNOUNCEMENTS are expected today confirming that the bid for a Humber Enterprise Zone, aimed at attracting new renewable energy developments to the Humber, has been accepted by the Government.

The 375 hectare Humber Renewable Energy Super Cluster covers both banks of the River Humber and includes the site of a Wind Turbine Manufacturing Plant proposed to be built by Siemens at Alexandra Dock as part of a Green Port Hull initiative, and a 2,000-acre energy park construction by ABLE UK Ltd near Killingholme.

As part of the Humber Enterprise Partnership, a separate North Bank group will bring together the East Riding, Hull and Scarborough to focus especially on tourism and the rural economy.

It is believed that up to 10,000 new jobs could be created with the further development of land as part of the Enterprise Zone proposals.

Enterprise Zone status will help the local economy and employment through £7.9m worth of business tax breaks, fewer planning restrictions and other incentives.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of the East Riding Council, said: “I am delighted that the Government has given the green light to the new Enterprise Zone, which will help us promote the local economy. It will be particularly useful in developing the Humber ports and the emerging renewable energy sector centred on Siemens’s proposed new wind turbine manufacturing plant in Hull.”

As reported in July this year the land under consideration for the Humber Enterprise Zone also includes “a largely undeveloped 49-hectare site at Paull east of Saltend”.

Humber bid for Enterprise Zone

THE NEW HUMBER ENTERPRISE PARTNERSHIP set up last month is competing with twenty eight other similar bodies from around the country each bidding for their area to be included as one of the final ten Enterprise Zone locations.

Eleven Enterprise Zones have already been established and benefit from simplified planning rules, super-fast broadband and tax breaks for businesses to promote growth. When established the new Enterprise Zones, according to a press release issued by the Department of Communities and Local Government, can help make the country the best place in Europe to start and grow a business. But the process will be very competitive and Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has said that "only the best will get the go ahead".

The Humber Enterprise Partnership bid to secure Enterprise Zone status will undoubtedly include the proposal by Siemens to open an £80 million wind turbine manufacturing plant on Alexandra Dock. But on a local level there may be some concerns that the Hull part of the Enterprise Zone sites involves developing land immediately North of the village of Paull.

The successful bids will be announced later this year.

Paull - A new community spirit!

TO CELEBRATE EVERYTHING POSITIVE ABOUT PAULL, then visit the new Paull Village Hall website.

Paull, a village of around 500 people, has undergone something of a transformation in community spirit over the last two years: - The St Andrew Church faced closure in 2007 unless funding for urgent roof repairs could be found, but in January last year the church was blessed by the Archbishop of York and villagers praised for their community efforts to keep it open. The church also now runs its own pop-in cafe that can be used as a base for those taking part in the village's unique Paull Heritage Trail.

Paull Scarecrow Festival
The Village Hall was also generally run-down and not used to its full potential, but now the Hall has a packed calendar of events and has ambitious plans to re-build itself as an iconic centre of local community activity.

The catalyst for these events has undoubtedly been the enthusiasm and drive of Village Hall and St Andrew Church Treasurer, Paul Cross. His passion for the area, its people and heritage has certainly inspired other villagers, ex-pats and supporters to get involved.

The Village Hall website itself is representative of the new lease of community life emanating from Paull and is a welcome addition to the growing number of hyperlocal community websites in the area.

Rightmove Places - Househunters can share and discover the HU12 area!

Rightmove.co.uk is one of the most well known property websites and is free to use. Although not an estate agent Rightmove has created one of the most comprehensive property information databases in the country.

Rightmove is currently testing a version of its new web service Rightmoveplaces at www.rightmoveplaces.co.uk which will allow house-hunters to find out more about the place in which their property - or proposed property - is located. The new website acts like a cross between a review website and a social network. Users can post information and photos about a place, and write about their opinions of services in an area i.e. character and personality, neighbourliness, restaurants and eating, etc.

There are Rightmove Places pages already set up for Hedon, Preston, Paull and Saltend. It is currently available only in Beta which means it is being tested and subject to change until a version based on user experience is determined. However, it already seems a very useful service.

Paull - perfect for the Bank Holiday!

PAULL is quite possibly the place to be this Bank Holiday long weekend!

The village of about 800 people is really punching above its weight as far as being an attraction for visitors. The active village community, particularly galvanised around St Andrew Church, have really made fantastic efforts to put Paull on the map!

The Paull Heritage Trail with its distinctive trail markers has already attracted those eager to discover the rich history of the village, but this weekend also sees the Paull Scarcrow Festival taking place on Bank Holiday Monday from 10am - 5pm.

There is of course always Fort Paull to check out - the attraction is staging a display of Knights in Battle on Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday.

It is almost guaranteed that the town's three pubs - The Royal Oak, Humber Tavern and Crown Inn - will each be providing something different to tempt visitors and residents to extend their fun just that little bit longer!

Find out more about the village and its events, history and activity via the St Andrew Church Fundraising Website and Wikipedia.

In short the advice from all the companies is that in the event of hearing the emergency sirens from any one of the five companies listed, at any time other than the nominated weekly test times, then residents should consider it:
...to be prudent to go indoors and listen to local radio stations for information updates"
Residents should:

GO IN doors. Do not collect your children from school, they will be properly cared for;

STAY IN and switch off ventilation fans, air conditioning units and all sources of ignition including gas and electrical heating appliances. Block incoming draughts and close windows. Do not light matches or naked flames. Do not smoke. Stay calm and rest;
