Holderness residents praised as 'Compost Giveaways' announced
HOLDERNESS RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN PRAISED for contributing to the success of the new brown bin collection services and keeping food waste out of the general green waste bins.
John Skidmore, the East Riding Council’s head of streetscene services, said:
The Council is currently organising the first of this year’s round of free compost giveaways which Mr Skidmore describes as a "reward of success":
4 July: Hilderthorpe coach park, Bridlington
5 July: Finkle Street car park, Market Weighton
6 July: Broadway car park, Hornsea
7 July: West Park, Shaftesbury Avenue entrance, Goole.
The dates and venues for other areas, including Pocklington, Withernsea and Beverley will be announced in the coming weeks. All giveaways will start at 5pm. Compost will not be given away before 5pm and those queueing in their cars are asked not to cause congestion and inconvenience to those living and working nearby.
John Skidmore, the East Riding Council’s head of streetscene services, said:
“Holderness was the first area to get caddies and there has been a 100 per cent take up, with no residents refusing to have one. One measure of the success of the new food waste and cardboard collection service in those areas is that waste in the green bins, which goes to landfill, has dropped by about a quarter."The roll out of the new collection of food waste in the brown bins has been made possible due to new high temperature treatments being developed for creating and dealing with compost. The Council is collecting more waste from the brown bins in the Holderness, Bridlington and Driffield areas than previously projected and is expected to announce the additional tonnages kept out of landfill in those areas at the end of the month.
The Council is currently organising the first of this year’s round of free compost giveaways which Mr Skidmore describes as a "reward of success":
“The giveaways are the rewards of success - the success of keeping garden, food waste and cardboard out of the green bin. Instead, the council collects it from the browns bin and sends it for composting which allows us to give it back to residents as soil improver.”The giveaways of two bags of compost per car, will take place at:
4 July: Hilderthorpe coach park, Bridlington
5 July: Finkle Street car park, Market Weighton
6 July: Broadway car park, Hornsea
7 July: West Park, Shaftesbury Avenue entrance, Goole.
