Appeal for Records of East Yorkshire Girl Guides
THE EAST RIDING archives and local studies service at the Treasure House, Beverley, is appealing for people to come forward with any documents that relate to the Girl Guides in the area.
Since 5 September 2009, the Girl Guides have been celebrating their centenary year. Guiding has played a major role in many girls’ childhood for generations. Yet our knowledge of its role in this part of the country risks being lost forever, according to East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s archives and local studies service.
The Treasure House, Beverley, preserves archives and published works relating to East Yorkshire’s history. In its repositories are over 2,500 archive collections documenting countless aspects of life in the East Riding.
It has recently emerged that among this great wealth of information there is very little that tells us anything about the Girl Guides in this region.
Collections officer, Sam Bartle, said:
Anyone who thinks they may have something of historical interest and wishes to preserve it for this and future generations, can contact Sam Bartle on (01482) 392794, email Samuel.Bartle@eastriding.gov.uk or visit the Treasure House, Champney Road, Beverley.

“We have no shortage of people coming to us with scouting archive collections, but for some reason we have received almost nothing to do with Girl Guides. This means that in decades, even centuries, to come there may be little or no trace of their existence in this part of the world."To overcome this gap in our local history, the archives and local studies service is appealing for people to come forward with any documents that relate to the Girl Guides in a local sense.
