Grants for Heritage

A GRANT SCHEME has been launched in the East Riding to help local communities protect heritage in 'serious decline'.

The LEADER programme, supported by English Heritage and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, offers grants of up to £5,000 to support heritage projects costing up to £20,000.

Current projects include the conservation of the last remaining East Riding timber cruck frame building at Octon, and the interpretation of the Rudston monolith (pictured © Copyright Stephen Horncastle and licensed for reuse under this Creative Commons Licence) as part of a wider pre-historic ritual landscape comparable with Stonehenge.

David Bull, the Rural Heritage Officer with the LEADER programme, said:
“A high proportion of the nationally important buildings and monuments in this area are in serious decline and are classified as at risk by English Heritage.”
Local groups can apply for support for projects including the conservation, interpretation and access to rural heritage.

The area has a rich rural heritage, from the first human settlers at the end of the last Ice Age to the pioneering farmsteads of the agricultural revolution and everything in between. The LEADER programme is financed by the European Agriculture Fund for Rural Development and by Defra.
