Tax Payer's Alliance Protest at Council's "excessive pay rises"
The Hull and East Riding Tax Payers' Alliance are calling for local people to join a protest rally against the East Riding Council's policy that led to the payment of £364,205 to one of its senior managers who was retiring early and the secrecy about the impacts of that policy.
The protest will take place outside County Hall in Beverley on Bank Holiday Monday 3rd May at 2:00pm. Organiser Andrew Allison explains on the group's blog:
We are protesting against the secrecy in County Hall. The leadership never wanted us to know about this payment. If the story hadn’t been leaked to the Yorkshire Post, would we have found out? We are protesting against the £1.4 million already paid out in 2008/9 to those seeking early retirement. All of these payments were made on a discretionary basis, and we are protesting against excessive pay rises and excessive salaries for senior officers, particularly at this time when the government is borrowing over £5000 for every second that ticks by.
Andrew Allison is asking those who can join the protest to e-mail him at at beverleyprotest@mail.com. If you are a Facebook user, join the Hull & East Riding Group and click here to confirm you are attending.
To highlight the crushing size of the national debt, the crusading campaign is undertaking a 1,300 mile tour of Britain - featuring a 7 metre long, digital Debt Clock, ticking up as the Government borrows more and more money.
The campaign has a simple but direct message for the nation's politicians: "Wake up to the National Debt!"
The 14-digit red LED display counts up the nation's debt at a breakneck speed. Hull's share of the national debt will be £5.1 billion by 2015 it is claimed.
The Debt Clock will be at Queen's Gardens (by the BBC), Queen's Dock Avenue, Hull, HU1 3DR from 7.30am to 10.00am.
